An article was posted
about my last painting "Path Before
Sunset, Bernal Heights" on Bernalwood
, a blog about the Bernal Heights neighborhood. That's awesome.

New cityscape: another view from Bernal Hill in SF. I'll show you some
obstacles I worked through on this one.

First stage:

Next stage:

Next stage. Trying to establish the overall colors and values:

Next stage. Starting to break it down:

Next stage: The concentration of lights in the middle of the skyline
will be a focal point. At this stage I don't like how the color scheme
is working. Too many things going on. The whole thing lacks unity:

Next stage: I start killing the saturated blue in the middle area. I
establish a second focal point where the foreground meets the middle
ground (the greenish street light):

Next stage: The saturated blues and purples in the distance aren't
working for me. I subdue the purple in the city skyline and decide to
set the time of day to a bit later into night rather than twilight. As
the city darkens I also darken the foreground path area:

Next stage. Obscuring more of the purple:

Next stage. Resolving detail:

And the finished painting, "Nightfall Path, Bernal Heights"

(12x24):

New still life.

The setup. The objects are straight across but I plan to add depth.
Ideally I would have set them up in a deeper space, but fudging it will
probably be ok:
