Dear Subscribers,

Greetings. I'm back. Happy New Year!
As mentioned before the hiatus, I've got a new Facebook artist page

My still life oil painting class resumes tomorrow. If you'd like to be on the class waiting list for March or beyond, shoot me an email.

Workshop! In February (8th-10th) I'm headed to Virginia to teach a small private 3-day workshop. It will be my first experience teaching in the condensed/intensive structure of a multi-day workshop, so that's really cool.

Schuler! After the weekend workshop I'll be hanging out for a day at the Schuler School of Fine Arts on Tuesday Feb 11. Can't wait to be back. It's been way too long.

New still life. Well, almost.

I posted this irked comment on Facebook last night: LINK to comment.

I was working on a new still life. Bringing foil back. In the end, the painting was scraped. But what I got out of it was worth it: I now have a clear idea of how I prefer to represent the value relationships of foil in my next painting.

Stages of the foiled painting (painted with knife):

In the above stages I like the relationship between background value and the values of the foil-wrapped wine glass.

Then, (above left) I take it too far. Now the background is competing with the highlights in the foil wine glass, so it becomes more about the darks....whereas previously the wine glass was grabbing attention with darks AND lights. So I scrape and start to pull it back (above right), but at this point I'm thinking about my next foil endeavor and how it will be better in both clarity of intent and in composition. So there you go.

JUST SOLD!:

"The Experiment" sold from RS Hanna Gallery.

Until next week,
