Dear Subscribers,
Greetings!
I got stuck on the portrait I was working on. I'm not sure where that
painting will go, but in the meantime I've peen working on a new still
life. Here is the setup:

That's the backside of an old waffle iron that my family used when I
was a kid, and now my own kids are benefiting from this well-loved and
poorly cleaned device ;).
First stage: Umber block in, then straight in with the knife.

My goal is to create a focal area on the right side of the waffle iron,
around where the glass stem is overlapping.

In service of that focal goal, I'm isolating the warmer/reddish light
tones to only that area of the iron, and shifting the entire dark
background towards complimentary cooler bluish/greenish tones which
will also allow for left side of the waffle iron to be more subtle:

Next stage. There will be a challenge in controlling the warmth from
the orange glass on the left so that it adds interest without taking
too much focus away from the right side of the iron.

Next stage. Starting to get more detailed. Resolving the level of all
the straight lines is time consuming but necessary. The table level and
the structures of the iron need to be parallel and convincing.

Next stage. More detail in the right side glass.

Next stage. I adjust the background color and value to create more
contrast and drama in my focal area. At this point, things are starting
to gel, and I'm more confident in the potential of this painting:

Everything is still on the clunky side so I begin to dial in more
details in the wine glass and in the textures of the iron.

To be continued in the next newsletter. I better finish this up, as my
family is anxious to eat waffles again. Lols.
